As much as I am a Bourbon fan, I am equally, and often even more, a Scotch fan. There is a vast variety of Scotch whisky, ranging in flavors from poached fruit drizzled with honey, to smoldering campfire in the morning dew, with all points in between. As today is National Scotch Day, I urge you to take a trip through the Scotch aisle at your favorite Liquor World location, and try something new to you. If you need help with that, don’t hesitate to ask… talking Scotch with people is one of my favorite things.

If you are new to the category, here are some quick guides to help you find the right bottle for you. There are five major regions of Scotch production, and they each have a general style that they follow. Highland Scotches are usually lighter, honey-forward on the palate, with notes of vanilla and dried fruit. Speyside Scotches are usually creamier, featuring notes of cooked fruit, caramel, and baking spice. Lowland Scotches are usually softer and smoother, with toffee, spicy ginger, and a touch of earthiness. Campbeltown Scotches are usually rich and robust, with fruit and vanilla accented by occasional salinity and dry smoke. Islay Scotches are usually big and smoky, filled with hefty notes of campfire, cocoa, and cinnamon-spice. Whichever region you are interested in, there is something for everyone in the Scotch aisle. Sláinte! - Chris Motley
